The Southwest Washington Special Education Conference and Resource Fair was created, organized, and developed by the Prairie High School Special Education Department. The first annual conference was held in April 2012 at Prairie High School. The event welcomed 250 guests, 65 exhibitors, and 52 concurrent break-out sessions. Planning for the first event began in October of 2011, when teachers in the department began to discuss the idea of “getting everyone in the same room”.
We understand that we live in a community that offers resources to families of students with special needs. We also understand that when you are a parent/guardian of a child with a disability, the resources that will support you and your family may be difficult to find. The ‘system’ is not always easy to navigate. We thought we could help.
The conference started with a simple concept. If we searched out everyone in our community serving families of students with special needs and asked them to share their service, product, and skills with those needing them, could we “get everyone in the same room”? In October 2011, we made contact with over 200 people, non-profits, social service agencies, schools, and organizations. The response was overwhelming.
For our second annual event in 2013, we created a committee, made up of educators in local districts and business members in Clark County aimed at planning and organizing the conference.
We are committed to providing an amazing opportunity for our community free of charge. Please join us on Saturday, April 25th, 2015 at PHS. We look forward to meeting you, sharing and learning with you, and celebrating you, your children, and our community.
